Capalbio (Grosseto), Tuscany. 2018
A terrace opening up to the wild landscape of Maremma, the garden of Capalbio was conceived with the idea that everything that fell within the boundaries of its enclosure would serve to exalt what lies outside its perimeter.
Mixed borders of subshrubs, perennial herbs, and grasses mark its edges whilst blending at the same time with the wild prairie beyond. The trees, mostly native, were chosen one by one for their shape. The field maples, in particular, were selected for their candelabra-like structure, a trace of an ancient vine-growing method called “vite maritata”. Finally, the two pergola and terracotta flooring in front of the house serve as an “outdoor living room,” perfect to unwind and enjoy the panorama.
